Spicy stewed tofu (Dubu-jorim) is a Korean recipe. This is tofu stewed in a spicy sauce, sautéed with caramelized onions, garlic and green onions, making it juicy, slightly spicy, crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. It is a tasty side dish for rice, noodles or porridge and tastes meaty, even though it is a completely vegetarian dish.

Recipe Ingredients

Tofu Cheese 500 g
Vegetable Oil 3 tbsp
Sesame Oil 1 tsp
Sesame 1 tsp
Garlic 1 clove
Green Onions 2 pcs
Onion 150 g
For Sauce
Soy Sauce 1 tbsp
Salt 1 tsp
Sugar 1 tsp
Water 0.5 cups

Cooking Recipe

The recipe for spicy stewed tofu is very simple, but you need to prepare the ingredients first, as it cooks pretty quickly. Chop the garlic, finely chop the green onion, set aside a small part. Finely chop the onion, mix the ingredients for the sauce in a separate bowl. Rinse the tofu under running water, pat dry with paper towels, and then chop. First, cut in half lengthwise, and then into slices with a side of 1 cm.

Heat vegetable oil in a frying pan, carefully lay out the tofu and fry for 7-8 minutes. When one side is browned, flip the tofu and simmer for another 7-8 minutes, until both sides of each piece of tofu are slightly crispy and golden brown.

Transfer the tofu to a plate, and add onion fat, garlic, most of the green onions to the pan. Stir and simmer over medium heat until the onion is slightly crispy.

Pour the sauce into the pan to the rest of the products, mix and simmer for some more time until the sauce becomes thicker.

Add the fried tofu to the pan, and stir to simmer for a few minutes until the cheese absorbs the flavor of the spices. Add fragrant sesame oil and the rest of green onions. When serving spicy tofu, sprinkle sesame seeds on top.
